One of the most common questions families ask before booking a Pandit is simple: how much will it cost? It is also one of the hardest to answer without a few details, because the dakshina for a puja depends on the ritual, the number of Pandits, the time it takes and several practical factors.

This guide explains what goes into the dakshina for a puja at home, shares PujaKarma's starting prices for the pujas families book most often, and explains how to get a clear quote for your own puja in Delhi NCR, Pune, Hyderabad or any of the cities we serve.

    What dakshina means

Dakshina is the offering made to the Pandit for performing a puja. Traditionally it is given with respect at the end of the ritual, often along with clothes, fruits or sweets. Today most families agree the dakshina in advance so there is no awkwardness on the day.

It helps to think of dakshina as recognising the Pandit's years of learning and the time he gives to your family, not only the hours of the puja itself. A good Pandit prepares in advance, explains the samagri and timing, travels to your home and often stays after the ritual to answer questions. That is why the dakshina for a well performed puja is not simply a rate per hour, and why it varies from one ritual to another.

At PujaKarma the dakshina is always shared and confirmed with you on WhatsApp before you book, so you know exactly what is included. There is no payment to enquire.

What affects the cost of a puja

    1. 1The ritual and its vidhiA one hour puja and a full day anushthan are very different. Longer rituals with more mantras, a full katha or a large havan naturally need more of the Pandit's time.
    2. 2Number of PanditsMany pujas need one Pandit, but rituals like Rudrabhishek with Rudri path, Vastu Shanti with homam or a wedding often need two or more Pandits to complete the chanting correctly.
    3. 3Havan or homamAdding a havan increases the time and the samagri, such as ghee, wood and havan samagri.
    4. 4SamagriSome families arrange their own samagri; others ask the Pandit or PujaKarma to bring everything. Arranged samagri is quoted separately or included, as you prefer.
    5. 5Travel within the cityLarge cities like Delhi NCR, Pune and Hyderabad are spread out. Travel time and distance to your home or venue can affect the quote.
    6. 6Muhurat demandOn popular muhurat days, especially in the wedding and house warming seasons, Pandits are in high demand and booking early helps.

These are PujaKarma's starting points for an experienced Pandit at home. The exact dakshina for your puja is confirmed on WhatsApp after we understand the vidhi you want.

    What is usually included

    • An experienced Pandit who follows your family's tradition
    • The sankalp in your family's names and gotra
    • The full vidhi for the puja, with mantras and explanation in your language where possible
    • Guidance on samagri, timing and preparation before the day

    Delhi NCR, Pune and Hyderabad

In Delhi, Gurugram and Noida, families most often book Griha Pravesh, Satyanarayan Katha, Sundarkand Path, Mata ki Chowki and Rudrabhishek, usually with a Hindi speaking North Indian Pandit. Society rules on havan smoke and timing are worth checking in advance.

In Pune, families often ask for a Marathi guruji for Satyanarayan Puja, Vastu Shanti or Udak Shanti, while North Indian families in Hinjewadi, Wakad and Kharadi look for a Pandit who performs the puja in Hindi.

In Hyderabad, Gruhapravesam, Satyanarayana Vratham and homams with a Telugu purohit are very common, alongside North Indian pujas for Hindi speaking families in Gachibowli, Kondapur and Kukatpally. PujaKarma arranges Pandits for all of these traditions.

Ways to plan within your budget

A puja does not need to be elaborate to be meaningful. If you are working within a budget, there are a few sensible ways to plan without compromising on the vidhi that matters to your family.

    • Choose the core ritual first. A Griha Pravesh with Ganesh, Vastu and Navagraha puja and a short havan covers the essentials; Satyanarayan Katha can be held separately on a later Purnima.
    • Arrange common samagri yourself using the list your Pandit shares, and ask us to arrange only the harder to find items.
    • Pick a date with some flexibility. Weekday muhurats and less crowded months are often easier to book than the most popular weekends.
    • Keep the number of Pandits to what the vidhi genuinely needs. Your Pandit can explain when a second Pandit is necessary and when it is optional.
    • Combine related rituals on the same day where your tradition allows, such as Vastu Shanti with Griha Pravesh, rather than booking separate visits.

Be open about your budget when you message us. We would rather suggest a simpler vidhi that is done properly than a larger one that is rushed.

How to get an exact quote

To get a clear dakshina for your puja, send these details on WhatsApp:

    • The puja and any additions you want, such as a havan or katha
    • Your preferred date, or a range of dates
    • Your city, locality and type of home or venue
    • Your family's tradition and the language you prefer
    • Whether you want samagri arranged

We confirm the Pandit, the vidhi, what is included and the dakshina before you book. Nothing is charged on this website.

    Online pujas and families abroad

Not every family can be present in person. Many families living in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, the Gulf and Singapore book pujas online, with a Pandit performing the sankalp in their names in India while the family joins live on video.

The dakshina for an online puja follows the same principles as a puja at home: the ritual, its duration, the number of Pandits and any havan or samagri. There is no travel involved, but the timing needs to suit both the muhurat and the family's time zone, which a Pandit plans with you.

Families in India sometimes choose an online puja too, for example when elders want a puja performed in Varanasi or Prayagraj but cannot travel, or when relatives in different cities want to join together. Ask us on WhatsApp about online options for the puja you have in mind, and we will share the dakshina in the same clear way.

Whichever way you book, the principle is the same: you know the Pandit, the vidhi, what is included and the dakshina before you commit to anything.

    Why a clear quote matters

A puja is a family occasion, and the last thing anyone wants is a disagreement about money on the day. Agreeing the dakshina in advance lets the family and the Pandit focus on the ritual itself.

PujaKarma serves families in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Varanasi and Prayagraj, and online worldwide. Whatever the puja, ask us on WhatsApp and we will share a clear quote.

    Questions families ask

Is the starting price the final price?

It is the starting dakshina for an experienced Pandit performing the core vidhi. The final figure depends on the number of Pandits, duration, havan, samagri and travel, and is confirmed on WhatsApp before you book.

Do I pay on the website?

No. Nothing is charged on this website. The dakshina and payment are agreed directly with our team on WhatsApp.

Is samagri included in the dakshina?

Not by default. You can arrange your own samagri using the list your Pandit shares, or ask us to arrange it and we will include it in the quote.

Why does a havan increase the cost?

A havan adds time to the puja and needs extra samagri such as ghee, wood and havan samagri, which is reflected in the dakshina.
