Shiv Puja

Shiv Puja is the traditional worship of Lord Shiva in a simpler, accessible form. It usually includes Ganesh puja, jal or milk abhishek of the Shivling, offering of bel patra, dhatura and white flowers, chanting of Om Namah Shivaya and Shiva stotras, and aarti. It can be performed with or without Mata Parvati and the Shiva parivar.

It is well suited to regular devotion, a Somvar vrat, the Mondays of Sawan, or Pradosh evenings. Many families also choose Shiv Puja for a household occasion when a full Rudrabhishek is not planned. Stotras such as the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram, Lingashtakam or Shiv Chalisa are often included.

Rituals vary by region, some traditions include a Shiv Katha or Solah Somvar vrat katha. The Pandit adapts the puja to your family's customs and can include Parvati worship for couples.

Lord Shiva is revered as Bholenath, the easily pleased one, who accepts even a simple offering of water and a bel leaf made with sincerity. Shiv Puja reflects this spirit, devotion over elaborateness, and is one of the most widely practised forms of Hindu worship.

The Shivling represents the formless, infinite Shiva, and offering water to it is traditionally seen as an act of surrender and cooling of the mind. Devotees associate regular Shiv Puja with peace, patience and a steady spiritual life; unmarried devotees often observe Somvar vrat with Shiv Parvati worship seeking a harmonious marriage.
