What is Pitru Dosha Puja?
Pitru Dosha Puja is a traditional puja performed to honour the ancestors and seek their peace and blessings. In Vedic astrology, Pitru Dosha is a term used for certain planetary combinations that are traditionally linked with unfulfilled duties towards ancestors. Many families also perform the puja simply when regular Shraddha has not been possible.
There is no need to approach it with fear. The puja is fundamentally an act of remembrance and gratitude, prayers, Tarpan and offerings made sincerely for one’s forebears. The Pandit explains the tradition in plain language and suggests a vidhi suited to your family.
In Varanasi, the puja is often performed near the Ganga, and it can also be performed on your behalf with an online sankalp where the family’s tradition permits.

Significance

The puja begins with Lord Ganesha’s worship and a sankalp with the family’s names and gotra.

Vishnu Puja
Lord Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi and mantras, traditionally invoked in ancestral rites.

Pitru Invocation and Pinda Offering
Ancestors are respectfully invoked and pindas are offered, as per the vidhi.

Tarpan
Water with black sesame and kusha is offered to the ancestors.
