Overview
What is Satyanarayan Puja?
Satyanarayan Puja is one of the most widely performed household pujas in India. It honours Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan, the embodiment of truth (satya), and centres on the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha, traditionally attributed to the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana.
The katha, narrated in five chapters, tells of a poor Brahmin, a woodcutter, a merchant and a king whose lives change after they observe the vrat with faith, and the consequences of forgetting a promise made to the Lord. The stories are simple, and their message is about sincerity, gratitude and keeping one's word.
Families commonly hold the puja on Purnima, on Ekadashi, or after a happy event such as a wedding, griha pravesh, a new job, a child's birth or a return from a journey. The mandap is often decorated with banana stems, and prasad of sheera or panjiri with bananas, tulsi and panchamrit is shared with relatives and neighbours. Regional practices differ, and the Pandit will follow your family's custom.

Significance
Satyanarayan Puja is considered accessible to everyone: it does not require an elaborate yajna, and in tradition any devotee may observe it regardless of background. That is part of why it became a natural way for families to mark milestones together.
Devotees associate the puja with gratitude for blessings received and with seeking harmony in the home. Listening to the katha attentively and receiving the prasad with respect are traditionally considered essential parts of the observance.

How the puja is performed

Mandap preparation
A chowki is set up and often decorated with banana stems and mango leaves. An image of Satyanarayan or Vishnu, a kalash and a shaligram (if kept) are placed on it.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp in the name of the host family with gotra and intention.

Kalash, Navagraha and Panchlokpal pujan
As per the fuller vidhi, the kalash, Navagraha and guardian deities are invoked before the main worship.

Satyanarayan Puja
Lord Satyanarayan is offered panchamrit snan, yellow vastra, chandan, tulsi, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.

Satyanarayan Katha
The Pandit narrates the five chapters of the Vrat Katha while the family listens with folded hands, often holding a few grains of rice or flowers.

Some families include a short havan after the katha, depending on regional custom.

The family performs the Satyanarayan aarti, and prasad of sheera or panjiri, bananas, panchamrit and tulsi is distributed to all present.
