Overview
Each of the 27 nakshatras has a presiding devata, a ruling graha and its own mantras. Nakshatra Shanti is a puja in which the devata of a person's birth nakshatra, the janma nakshatra, is worshipped with mantra jaap and often a small homam.
Families perform it on the birth star day each year, on a milestone birthday, or when a Pandit reading the horoscope suggests a shanti for the nakshatra. In South Indian homes it is often done on the janma nakshatra in the month of birth, while North Indian families may combine it with Navagraha puja.
The Pandit begins by confirming the birth nakshatra from the date, time and place of birth. The vidhi, the mantras and the length of the jaap then follow the nakshatra and your family's tradition.

The birth nakshatra is traditionally seen as closely linked to a person's nature and life path. Worshipping its devata is a way of seeking that devata's blessing and grace.
Nakshatra Shanti is a prayer for steadiness and wellbeing rather than a response to fear. A Pandit can explain what is customary for your nakshatra and family.
