What is Navratri Puja?
Navratri Puja is the nine-night worship of the Divine Mother, observed twice a year in most households: Chaitra Navratri in spring and Sharad Navratri in autumn. Each day is dedicated to one of the Navadurga, the nine forms of Durga, from Shailputri on the first day to Siddhidatri on the ninth.
The observance begins on Pratipada with Ghatasthapana, where a kalash is established and barley (jau) is sown in soil beside it. Many families keep an akhand jyoti (continuous lamp) burning for the nine days, recite the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa daily, and conclude with Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami and a havan.
A Pandit can perform the Ghatasthapana alone, visit on key days such as Ashtami and Navami, or conduct daily puja and path throughout. Fasting rules, the day of Kanya Pujan and other customs vary by family and region, and the Pandit will follow yours.
In North Indian homes Navratri means Ghatasthapana with jau sown beside the kalash, an akhand jyoti, the Durga Saptashati read each day, Kanya Pujan with halwa, puri and chana on Ashtami or Navami, and a havan to close, often with a Mata ki Chowki or Jagran for family and neighbours. In Hyderabad and Bangalore, where Navaratri is celebrated as Dasara, Bathukamma or Golu, Hindi speaking families often look for a Pandit who knows this North Indian sequence, and we arrange one, along with Telugu and Kannada Purohits for local customs.
Significance

When is the Ghatasthapana muhurat?
Ghatasthapana is done on Pratipada, the first day of Navratri, usually in the morning or during Abhijit muhurat. The Pandit checks the panchang for the exact time in your city, and avoids periods such as Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga where the tradition advises it.
Can a Pandit do the Durga Saptashati path all nine days?
Yes. A Pandit can read the full Durga Saptashati each day, or a set portion daily so the text is completed over the nine days, at your home or online in your name. Tell us the format you want when you enquire.
Can you arrange a North Indian Pandit for Navratri in Delhi NCR, Hyderabad or Pune?
Yes. We arrange Hindi speaking Pandits for Ghatasthapana, daily path, Kanya Pujan and the Ashtami or Navami havan in the North Indian vidhi. For Dasara, Bathukamma or Golu customs, we arrange a local Purohit instead.
Can we do the Navami havan in an apartment?
Yes. Pandits use a small havan kund with dry samagri and ghee to keep smoke low, near a balcony or window. Check your society's rules and let the security team know about smoke detectors beforehand.
Can you arrange a Mata ki Chowki or Jagran?
Mention it when you enquire. A Mata ki Chowki usually needs a bhajan mandali along with the Pandit, and we will let you know what we can arrange in your city for your date.
What is the difference between Chaitra, Sharad and Gupt Navratri?
Chaitra Navratri falls in spring and ends on Ram Navami; Sharad Navratri falls in autumn and leads to Dussehra, and is the one most families observe at home. The two Gupt Navratris, in Magh and Ashadh, are kept more quietly, mostly by sadhaks. The puja is similar, and the Pandit follows your family's practice.
