Overview
What is Navratri Puja?
Navratri Puja is the nine-night worship of the Divine Mother, observed twice a year in most households: Chaitra Navratri in spring and Sharad Navratri in autumn. Each day is dedicated to one of the Navadurga, the nine forms of Durga, from Shailputri on the first day to Siddhidatri on the ninth.
The observance begins on Pratipada with Ghatasthapana, where a kalash is established and barley (jau) is sown in soil beside it. Many families keep an akhand jyoti (continuous lamp) burning for the nine days, recite the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa daily, and conclude with Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami and a havan.
A Pandit can perform the Ghatasthapana alone, visit on key days such as Ashtami and Navami, or conduct daily puja and path throughout. Fasting rules, the day of Kanya Pujan and other customs vary by family and region, and the Pandit will follow yours.

Significance
The Devi Mahatmya describes the Goddess battling Mahishasura and other demons over nine nights, culminating in victory on the tenth day, Vijayadashami. Navratri is therefore understood as a period of spiritual effort, discipline and renewal.
The nine forms of Durga are traditionally associated with different qualities, from steadiness and austerity to courage, nurturing and fulfilment. Devotees see the nine nights as a time to turn inward, simplify the diet and dedicate daily time to prayer.

How the puja is performed

Ghatasthapana
On Pratipada, within the muhurat, a clay bed is prepared with sown barley and a kalash is established with water, coins, mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth.

Sankalp for the nine days
The Pandit takes a sankalp for the entire Navratri observance with the family's names, gotra and intention.

Akhand jyoti (optional)
A continuous ghee or oil lamp is lit and tended throughout the nine days, if the family keeps this custom.

Daily Navadurga puja
Each day the relevant form of the Goddess is worshipped with flowers, offerings and aarti, following the traditional sequence.

Durga Saptashati or Chalisa path
Chapters of the Durga Saptashati, the Devi Kavach, Argala and Keelak, or the Durga Chalisa are recited daily as per the chosen vidhi.

Kanya Pujan
On Ashtami or Navami, young girls (traditionally nine) and often a boy as Langur or Bhairav are honoured with foot-washing, tilak, halwa-puri-chana and gifts.

Havan and visarjan
A havan is performed on Navami, followed by aarti, and the kalash and sprouted barley are respectfully concluded on Dashami as per custom.
