    Overview

What is Mata ki Chowki & Jagran?

Mata ki Chowki is a devotional gathering in which the family invites Mata Rani into the home. A decorated chowki, a small raised seat, is set up for the Goddess, the akhand jyot is lit, and the evening is filled with bhajans, katha and aarti. A Jagran, also called Jagrata, is the longer form that continues through the night until dawn.

The tradition is especially loved in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal and Jammu, and among families who are devotees of Maa Vaishno Devi. Families hold a chowki to give thanks for a wish fulfilled, on a birthday, after a new home or business, during Navratri, or simply to bring relatives together in devotion.

A Pandit performs the Ganesh Pujan, kalash sthapana, jyot puja and the sankalp in the family's name, while a bhajan mandali leads the singing. The Pandit and the mandali work together so that the puja, the bhajans, the Taara Rani katha and the aarti flow in the order your family expects.

Significance of Mata ki Chowki & Jagran

    वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।

    निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

    Traditional Ganesha prayer

The jyot, a flame lit from ghee, is worshipped as the presence of the Goddess herself. Devotees keep it burning for the whole chowki or jagran as a sign of her blessing on the home.

Singing the Goddess's praises together is regarded in the Bhakti tradition as one of the simplest and most joyful forms of worship. A chowki brings the whole family and neighbourhood into that devotion.

Mata ki Chowki & Jagran FAQs

If yours is not here, ask it. A real person answers every message on WhatsApp.

What is the difference between Mata ki Chowki and Jagran?

A chowki is usually an evening of puja and bhajans lasting a few hours. A jagran, or jagrata, is the longer form in which the bhajans and devotion continue through the night until sunrise.

Do you arrange the bhajan mandali as well?

The Pandit performs the puja, jyot and aarti. On request we help connect you with a bhajan mandali and sound setup in your city, and confirm everything on WhatsApp before you book.

Can Mata ki Chowki be held in an apartment or society clubhouse?

Yes. Many families hold the chowki in their living room, on a terrace or in the society clubhouse. Check sound timings with your society, especially for a jagran.
