Overview
What is Navagraha Puja?
Navagraha Puja honours the nine celestial influences of Jyotish in a single, complete ritual. Rather than focusing on one planet, the Pandit invites all nine grahas onto a consecrated mandala, offers each its traditional grain, flower and mantra, and prays for harmony across every area of life. For many families it is the most natural starting point when they want a graha shanti but are not sure which planet to focus on.
The puja is commonly performed at the start of new ventures, around important family events, during a difficult planetary period, or simply as a periodic act of devotion. It usually begins with Ganesh puja and a sankalp in the names of the family members, followed by Navagraha sthapana, individual mantras for each graha and, if the family wishes, a Navagraha homam.

Significance
In Vedic astrology the nine grahas are understood as forces that shape the rhythm of a person's life, health, relationships, work and inner peace. Each graha has a presiding devata, and the scriptures describe worship of all nine together as a way to seek their collective grace rather than appeasing any one of them in isolation.
Devotees associate Navagraha Puja with steadiness and a calmer mind during changing circumstances. It is also widely performed as an auspicious preliminary before larger rituals such as griha pravesh, vivah or a new business, reflecting the traditional belief that beginnings go more smoothly with the blessings of all nine grahas.

How the puja is performed

Preparation and purification
The space is cleaned and the altar set up. The Pandit performs achaman and pavitrikaran to purify the participants and samagri.

Ganesh puja and sankalp
Lord Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp with the names, gotra and, where relevant, birth details of the family members.

Kalash sthapana
A kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut is established and Varuna and other devatas are invoked.

Navagraha mandala sthapana
The nine grahas are installed on a mandala, each in its traditional position and colour, often using their associated grains.

Individual graha puja and mantras
Each graha is offered flowers, akshat, its traditional grain and naivedya while its Vedic or beej mantra is recited.

Navagraha homam (optional)
If the family chooses, a homam is performed with samidha traditionally associated with each graha.

Aarti and prarthana
Aarti is performed and the family offers a prayer for peace and well-being.

Dakshina, daan and prasad
The puja concludes with dakshina, any daan the family wishes to make, and distribution of prasad.
