Overview
What is Vastu Shanti Puja?
Vastu Shanti Puja honours Vastu Purusha, the deity believed in tradition to preside over every plot of land and building, along with the devatas of the directions. It is commonly performed alongside Griha Pravesh, after renovation or structural changes, or when a family feels the home would benefit from a formal ritual of peace.
The vidhi typically includes Ganesh puja, Kalash sthapana, Navagraha puja, worship of the Vastu mandala with offerings to the deities of its squares, and a havan with Vastu mantras. Some families also install a Vastu yantra at the end of the puja.
A Vastu Shanti is a religious ritual, not an architectural fix, it does not replace structural or design advice. The scale of the vidhi and the customs followed vary by region and family, and the Pandit adapts the ceremony accordingly.

Significance
According to a well-known Puranic story, Vastu Purusha was a being pinned to the earth by the devatas, who agreed to reside on his body; he was granted the boon of being worshipped before any construction or dwelling. Vastu Shanti is how households traditionally honour him and the directional deities before or while occupying a space.
Devotees see the ritual as a way of acknowledging the land, the elements and the directions, and of seeking forgiveness for any disturbance caused during construction. It is associated with peace, harmony and a settled atmosphere in the home or workplace.

How the puja is performed

The Pandit takes the sankalp in the name of the owner or head of the family, with names, gotra, address and intention.

Ganesh puja and Kalash sthapana
Lord Ganesha is worshipped and a kalash is established to invoke holy waters and deities.

Navagraha and Shodash Matrika puja
The nine planetary deities and the mother goddesses are worshipped as per the vidhi followed.

Vastu mandala puja
A Vastu mandala is drawn or placed, and Vastu Purusha along with the devatas of its squares and the directions are worshipped with offerings.

Vastu havan
A havan is performed with Vastu mantras, Navagraha ahutis and ghee, often with specific samidha (wood).

Balidan offerings and yantra sthapana
Symbolic offerings (such as grains and sweets) are made to the directional deities; a Vastu yantra may be installed if the family wishes.

Purnahuti and aarti
The havan concludes with purnahuti, followed by aarti, sprinkling of sanctified water through the space and prasad.
