Chhath Puja is one of the most revered festivals of Bihar, Purvanchal and Varanasi. Over four days in the month of Kartik, the vratis worship Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya with fasting, purity and offerings made at the water's edge, most famously on the ghats of the Ganga.
The observance begins with Nahay Khay, continues with Kharna in the evening, and reaches its heart on the third day with sandhya arghya to the setting sun, followed at dawn by usha arghya to the rising sun. Thekua, seasonal fruits, sugarcane and a bamboo soop or daura carry the offerings.
Chhath is largely performed by the family itself, and customs pass from mother to daughter in law. A Pandit can guide the sankalp and vidhi, recite the katha and help families new to the vrat, or those observing it away from home, follow the tradition correctly.
