Overview
What is Pind Daan?
Pind Daan is one of the most important rites for honouring the departed. Family members offer pindas, small rounds made of rice or barley flour, sesame and ghee, along with water and prayers, remembering loved ones and seeking peace for their souls. It is a way for a family to express gratitude, love and continuity with those who came before.
Kashi (Varanasi) has long been regarded as one of the most holy places for rites connected with the departed, and many families come to perform Pind Daan on the ghats beside the Ganga. Gaya, in Bihar, is also traditionally renowned for Pind Daan, and some families perform the rite at both places, according to their custom.

Significance
In Hindu tradition, the pinda is understood as a symbolic offering of nourishment to the departed, and Pind Daan is traditionally believed to support the soul’s peaceful onward journey. The Garuda Purana and other texts describe offerings to the Pitrus as an essential duty of descendants.
Beyond its ritual meaning, Pind Daan is an act of remembrance. Speaking the names of parents, grandparents and forebears, and offering with one’s own hands, gives families a quiet space to grieve, give thanks and feel connected to their lineage.

How the puja is performed

Guidance Before the Day
The Pandit speaks with the family to understand whom the rite is for, the family’s tradition, and practical arrangements.

Purification and Sankalp
The performer bathes or purifies with Ganga jal, and takes a sankalp with the names and gotra of the departed and the family.

Invocation of the Pitrus
Prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu and the ancestors are respectfully invoked with kusha grass and sesame.

Preparing the Pindas
Pindas are prepared from rice or barley flour, black sesame, ghee and honey, as per custom.

Offering the Pindas
The pindas are offered with mantras, water, flowers and sesame, remembering each generation by name.

Tarpan
Water mixed with sesame is offered to the ancestors, often while standing near or in the Ganga.

Visarjan and Daan
The pindas are respectfully immersed or offered as per tradition, and food or daan is given as the family wishes.
