What is Pind Daan?
Pind Daan is one of the most important rites for honouring the departed. Family members offer pindas, small rounds made of rice or barley flour, sesame and ghee, along with water and prayers, remembering loved ones and seeking peace for their souls. It is a way for a family to express gratitude, love and continuity with those who came before.
Kashi (Varanasi) has long been regarded as one of the most holy places for rites connected with the departed, and many families come to perform Pind Daan on the ghats beside the Ganga. Gaya, in Bihar, is also traditionally renowned for Pind Daan, and some families perform the rite at both places, according to their custom.

Significance
In Hindu tradition, the pinda is understood as a symbolic offering of nourishment to the departed, and Pind Daan is traditionally believed to support the soul’s peaceful onward journey. The Garuda Purana and other texts describe offerings to the Pitrus as an essential duty of descendants.

How Pind Daan is performed

- 2Purification and SankalpThe performer bathes or purifies with Ganga jal, and takes a sankalp with the names and gotra of the departed and the family.
- 3Invocation of the PitrusPrayers are offered to Lord Vishnu and the ancestors are respectfully invoked with kusha grass and sesame.
- 4Preparing the PindasPindas are prepared from rice or barley flour, black sesame, ghee and honey, as per custom.
- 5Offering the PindasThe pindas are offered with mantras, water, flowers and sesame, remembering each generation by name.

How much does Pind Daan cost?

How early should we book Pind Daan for Pitru Paksha?
As early as you can. Pitru Paksha is the busiest fortnight of the year on the ghats of Kashi, and the dates people prefer, the tithi of the departed and Sarva Pitru Amavasya, fill up first. Share the names, gotra, the tithi if you know it, and your travel dates, and we will plan the rite.
Can Pind Daan be done online if we cannot travel to Varanasi?
Yes. A Pandit performs the pinda offerings at a Varanasi ghat with sankalp in the names of your departed family members and your gotra, and you join by video. Many families living in other cities or abroad choose this, and some travel to Kashi later for the rite in person.
Can a Pandit guide Pind Daan at our home in Delhi NCR, Hyderabad or Pune?
Yes. Pinda offerings as part of Shraddha in Pitru Paksha or on the tithi of the departed can be performed at home, and we arrange Hindi speaking Pandits who follow the North Indian vidhi, or Telugu and Kannada Purohits for Pinda Pradanam in your custom.
Is Pind Daan done after a death in the family?
Yes. In most traditions pindas are offered during the rites after a death, including the tenth day, around the thirteenth day (Terahvi) and the first anniversary, and many families later perform Pind Daan at a tirtha such as Kashi. Customs differ, so the Pandit will follow what your family has always done.
When is the best time to perform Pind Daan?
Pitru Paksha, Amavasya and the death anniversary (tithi) are traditionally preferred. It can also be performed on other days when the family is in Varanasi, the Pandit will guide you.
Can daughters or women perform Pind Daan?
Traditions differ. Historically the rite was often performed by sons, but many families today have daughters, wives or other relatives perform it. The Pandit will respect your family’s wishes.
What should we bring to Varanasi for Pind Daan?
The names and gotra of the departed, the date of passing if known, and comfortable, simple clothing, often white or light-coloured. Samagri can be arranged on request.
Should Pind Daan be done in Varanasi or Gaya?
Both are traditionally revered for this rite. Some families perform it in Kashi, some in Gaya, and some at both. Your family priest’s guidance and custom are the best guide.
