Overview

What is Karva Chauth Puja?

Karva Chauth is observed by married women on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, mainly in North India. The day is kept as a nirjala fast from sunrise, and in the evening women gather for the puja of Goddess Gauri, Lord Shiva and the family of Shiva, with the karva, a small earthen pot, at the centre of the worship.

The evening puja includes the Karva Chauth katha, the story of Queen Veeravati and her devotion, followed by the exchange of karvas and blessings among the women. After moonrise, arghya is offered to the moon and the fast is broken.

A Pandit can lead the puja and katha for a single family or for a gathering, and guide first time vratis on the sankalp, the sargi customs of the morning and the timing of moonrise in your city.

Significance

The vrat is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, revered as the ideal of devotion within marriage, together with Lord Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Worship of Chandra at moonrise completes the observance.

Karva Chauth is also a celebration of the bond among married women of a family and neighbourhood, who come together for the katha and share blessings for one another.

How the puja is performed

Sargi and sankalp
Before sunrise the vrati eats sargi, often given by the mother in law, and takes the sankalp for the nirjala fast.

Setting up the puja
In the evening an image of Gauri and the Karva Chauth calendar are placed, with a karva filled with water, a diya, sweets and a thali of offerings.

Gauri puja and katha
The Pandit leads the worship of Gauri, Shiva and Ganesha, followed by the Karva Chauth katha while the women pass their thalis in a circle.

Chandra arghya and parana
At moonrise the vrati views the moon through a sieve, offers arghya from the karva and breaks the fast with water from her husband's hand, as per custom.
