Overview
What is Griha Pravesh Puja?
Griha Pravesh is the ceremony a family performs when moving into a new home for the first time. It usually begins with Ganesh puja and Kalash sthapana, continues with worship of Vastu Purusha and the Navagraha, and closes with a havan. A defining moment is the entry itself: the lady of the house traditionally steps in with her right foot first, often carrying a filled kalash, and in many families milk is boiled until it overflows as a sign of abundance in the new kitchen.
Scriptural tradition speaks of three kinds of Griha Pravesh: Apurva (entering a newly built home), Sapurva (returning to a home after travel or a long absence) and Dwandvah (entering after renovation or rebuilding, sometimes after a mishap). The vidhi can be kept simple or extended with Vastu Shanti, Satyanarayan Katha or a larger havan, depending on the family's wishes.

Griha Pravesh marks the transition from a building to a lived-in home, inviting the blessings of Lord Ganesha for an obstacle-free start and honouring Vastu Purusha, the presiding spirit of the site.
The ritual also carries a strong family dimension. Elders, relatives and neighbours are often invited, the first meal is cooked and offered, and the day is remembered as the family's beginning in that space. Devotees associate a properly performed Griha Pravesh with harmony, peace and a sense of rootedness in the new home.

How the puja is performed

Dwar puja and entry
The main door is decorated with a toran of mango leaves and marigold, swastik and rangoli. The family enters at the muhurat, traditionally right foot first, carrying a kalash.

Sankalp
The Pandit takes the sankalp in the name of the head of the household, stating the family's names, gotra, the address and the purpose of the puja.

Ganesh puja and Kalash sthapana
Lord Ganesha is worshipped first, followed by the establishment of the kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut, invoking holy rivers and deities.

Punyahavachan and Navagraha puja
Purification mantras are recited and water is sprinkled through the home. The nine planetary deities are worshipped for a balanced beginning.

Vastu puja
Vastu Purusha is worshipped, often with a Vastu yantra or small offerings placed in key directions, as per family custom.

Havan
A havan is performed with ghee, samagri and specific ahutis for Ganesha, Navagraha and Vastu devata.
