Overview
What is Lakshmi Puja?
Lakshmi Puja honours Goddess Mahalakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, who is associated with shri: prosperity, abundance, grace and auspiciousness. The best-known Lakshmi Puja takes place on Diwali, the Amavasya of Kartik, when homes and shops are lit with diyas to welcome the Goddess.
The puja is usually performed together with Ganesha, and often with Kuber and Saraswati, especially in business households where account books are also worshipped. The vidhi typically includes kalash sthapana, shodashopachara offerings, recitation of the Shri Suktam, Lakshmi Ashtottara names or the Kanakadhara Stotram, and aarti.
Many families also perform Lakshmi Puja on Fridays, on Sharad Purnima (Kojagari Lakshmi Puja in eastern India), during Dhanteras and at a new home or business. Rituals and timings differ by region and family, and the Pandit will follow your custom.

Significance
In the Puranas, Lakshmi emerges from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) seated on a lotus. The lotus, rising clean from muddy water, is seen as a symbol of purity amid worldly life, and the Goddess is associated with both material and spiritual well-being.
The Shri Suktam, a hymn found in the khila (supplementary) portion of the Rigveda, is one of the oldest prayers to Lakshmi and remains central to her worship. Devotees see the puja not only as a request for abundance but as gratitude for what the household already has.

How the puja is performed

Cleaning and preparation
The home or shop is cleaned and lit with diyas. A chowki with red cloth is set up with images of Lakshmi and Ganesha, and a rangoli is often made at the entrance.

A kalash is established with water, mango leaves and coconut, and Lord Ganesha is worshipped first.

The Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names, gotra and intention for the puja.

Goddess Lakshmi is invoked and offered snan, vastra, kumkum, lotus or red flowers, kamal gatta, incense, lamp and naivedya.
