Sundarkand Path

Sundarkand Path is the recitation of Sundarkand, the fifth book of Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, which describes Hanuman's leap across the ocean, his search for Sita in Lanka, his meeting with her in the Ashok Vatika and his return to Shri Rama with news of her. It is a chapter of courage, devotion and hope.

In most North Indian homes the path is sung in a melodious group style, with a harmonium and dholak, beginning with Ganesh and Hanuman vandana and the Hanuman Chalisa, and ending with aarti. Families, friends and neighbours often join in, making it as much a gathering as a ritual. The Sanskrit Sundara Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana is recited in some southern traditions instead.

Tulsidas is traditionally associated with Varanasi, where much of the Ramcharitmanas is believed to have been composed, and the city's Sankat Mochan temple has a long tradition of Sundarkand recitation. Formats range from a simple home path to a sangeetmay path with a group of singers, and the Pandit will adapt to your family's preference.

Sundarkand is often described as the heart of the Ramcharitmanas because it shows the devotee, Hanuman, at his most capable and humble, succeeding through complete faith in Rama. Its chaupais and dohas are widely memorised and sung across generations.

Devotees associate the path with courage, the removal of obstacles and a hopeful turn in difficult circumstances, just as Hanuman's arrival brought hope to Sita. Many families hold it on Tuesdays, Saturdays or before important events, and also simply to fill the home with devotion.
