Overview
Rudrabhishek is the abhishek, or ritual bathing, of the Shivling performed while chanting the Rudrashtadhyayi (commonly called Rudri) from the Shukla Yajurveda, or the Sri Rudram (Namakam Chamakam) in South Indian traditions. Offerings such as Gangajal, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugarcane juice and panchamrit are poured over the Shivling in a continuous stream, followed by bel patra, flowers and bhasma.
In its most common form a Pandit recites the Rudri once or several times during the abhishek. Larger versions increase the number of recitations and Pandits, leading to Ekadasha Rudra (eleven recitations), Laghu Rudra and Maha Rudra. The choice of liquids is also customised, devotees traditionally select specific offerings for specific intentions, and the Pandit guides this as per family custom.
Rudrabhishek can be performed at home on a Parad or narmadeshwar Shivling, at a temple, or online with sankalp in your name. In Varanasi, the city of Kashi Vishwanath, it holds a special place in daily devotion.

Rudra is the fierce yet compassionate form of Shiva invoked in the Vedas. The Rudram hymn praises Him in His many forms and asks for His grace; the abhishek expresses devotion by cooling and honouring the Shivling, which represents the formless Shiva. Devotees describe Shiva as Abhishek-priya, one who is especially pleased by abhishek.
Rudrabhishek is traditionally associated with calming difficulties, seeking peace of mind, and purifying one's intentions. It is commonly performed for family wellbeing, on important life occasions, and during holy periods like Sawan and Maha Shivratri, when devotees believe Shiva's worship carries particular merit.

The Pandit takes the sankalp with the devotee's name, gotra, place and intention for the abhishek.
Lord Ganesha and Goddess Gauri are worshipped first, along with Kalash sthapana and Navagraha puja as per vidhi.
The Shivling is placed facing north with its outlet (jalhari) positioned correctly, and Lord Shiva is invoked with Vedic mantras.
While the Rudrashtadhyayi or Sri Rudram is recited, Gangajal, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugarcane juice and panchamrit are offered in a steady stream.
The Shivling is cleaned and adorned with chandan, bhasma, bel patra, dhatura, akshat and flowers.
Bhog is offered, and mantras such as Om Namah Shivaya and the Mahamrityunjaya mantra may be chanted.
The puja concludes with Shiva aarti, pradakshina and distribution of prasad and charanamrit.
