What is Mundan Sanskar?
Mundan Sanskar, also known as Chudakarana, is the ceremony of a child’s first haircut. One of the sixteen Hindu sanskars, it is traditionally performed in the early years of childhood, and in many families it is an important occasion shared with grandparents and relatives.
Many families travel to Varanasi to hold Mundan near the Ganga or at a temple associated with their family tradition, while others prefer the comfort of home. The Pandit conducts the puja and mantras, and a barber performs the haircut, after which the hair is offered as per family custom.

For North Indian families, from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to Rajasthan and Punjab, Mundan is a family event: grandparents come, the bua often catches the hair in a cloth, haldi or chandan is applied to the head afterwards, and many families keep a small choti (shikha).
