What is Vivah Graha Shanti (Before Wedding)?

In many families the wedding rituals begin with a graha shanti. Held at the home of the bride or groom a day or two before the wedding, it brings the family together to worship Ganesh, the Navagraha and the family deity before the celebrations begin.

In Gujarati homes it is known simply as Grahshanti and is often combined with Mandap Muhurat. Marathi families may combine it with Devak and Udak Shanti, and North Indian families with Ganesh puja and Matrika puja. The core of the ritual is the Navagraha puja and a havan.

Because each community does it a little differently, it helps to tell the Pandit your tradition. The vidhi, the language of explanation and the timing can then follow what your family expects.

How the puja is performed, step by step.

Ganesh puja and sankalp
The sankalp is taken for the bride or groom with the family's gotra and the wedding date.

Matrika puja and punyahavachan
The mother goddesses are honoured and the place and family are purified with mantras.

Kalash sthapana
A kalash is installed and the devatas are invoked.

Navagraha puja
Each of the nine grahas is worshipped with its own colour, grain and mantra.

Havan
Offerings are made into the fire with the Navagraha mantras.

Aarti and blessings
The ritual closes with aarti and blessings for the bride or groom from the elders.
