Overview
What is Udak Shanti?
Udak Shanti takes its name from udak, the Sanskrit word for water. Pandits chant a long sequence of Vedic shanti mantras over a kalash filled with water, so that the water itself carries the prayers. The water is then sprinkled over the family and through every room of the home.
In Maharashtrian homes, especially in Pune and Mumbai, Udak Shanti is a familiar rite before moving into a new house, before a wedding or thread ceremony, on a milestone birthday, or after a long illness in the family. It is usually performed by two or more Pandits who recite the mantras together.
The ritual is simple to host at home and does not need a large havan. A Pandit familiar with the Marathi vidhi will guide the family through the sankalp, the recitation and the sprinkling of the water, and explain each step as it happens.
Significance of Udak Shanti
ब्रह्मा मुरारिस्त्रिपुरान्तकारी भानुः शशी भूमिसुतो बुधश्च।
गुरुश्च शुक्रः शनिराहुकेतवः सर्वे ग्रहाः शान्तिकरा भवन्तु॥

The family takes the sankalp with their names, gotra and the occasion for the shanti.

Punyahavachan
Mantras are recited to purify the place and the people taking part in the ritual.

Kalash sthapana
A kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut is installed and the devatas are invoked in it.

Udak Shanti mantra path
The Pandits chant the Udak Shanti sequence of Vedic shanti mantras over the kalash, usually for one to two hours.

The mantra water is sprinkled over the family members and through each room of the home.
