Overview
What is Panchak Shanti?
Panchak is the period when the moon passes through the last five nakshatras: Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. In North Indian tradition, if a death in the family happens during Panchak, a Panchak Shanti is customarily performed along with the last rites.
Some families follow the custom of placing five small effigies of kusha grass with the body at the cremation, and then complete the Panchak Shanti on a suitable day, often with Navagraha puja, mantra jaap and a havan. Practice varies from family to family and region to region.
This is a sensitive time for any family. A Pandit familiar with the North Indian vidhi will explain what your tradition expects, help coordinate it with the antim sanskar and the rites that follow, and keep the process simple and respectful.
