In many Marathi homes in Pune and Mumbai, a new beginning is not complete until the guruji has performed Udak Shanti. The name says it simply: udak means water and shanti means peace. Water in a kalash is energised with Vedic mantras, and that water is then sprinkled through the home and on the family, as a traditional way of inviting calm and well being.

Udak Shanti is one of the most loved household rituals in Maharashtra, yet families who have moved to Pune or Mumbai from elsewhere, or younger couples arranging it for the first time, often ask what it actually involves. This guide explains when families perform it, how the ritual unfolds, what to keep ready, and what to discuss with the guruji before the day.

    What Udak Shanti means

At the heart of Udak Shanti is a recitation of shanti mantras drawn from the Vedas, chanted over a kalash of water. The water becomes the medium of the ritual. Once the chanting is complete, the guruji sprinkles it on the family members and through the rooms of the house, and family members often take a little as teerth.

Families associate the ritual with peace in the home, protection from obstacles and a calm start to a new phase of life. Like all such rituals, these are traditional beliefs held with devotion rather than promises of any particular outcome.

Udak Shanti is usually performed by one or more gurujis trained in the Rigvedic or Yajurvedic recitation followed in Maharashtra. The chanting is the main part of the ritual, so families often value a guruji whose recitation is clear and unhurried.

    When families perform Udak Shanti

The occasions vary from family to family, but these are the most common:

    • Griha Pravesh: entering a new flat or bungalow, either on its own or alongside Vastu Shanti.
    • Before a wedding: many families hold Udak Shanti at home a day or two before the marriage rituals begin.
    • After an illness or a difficult period: as a way of marking a fresh start for the household.
    • Birthdays and milestones: especially the 61st birthday (Shashtipurti) and other later birthdays.
    • Before a long journey or a move abroad, or when a family member returns home after a long time.
    • Annual observance: some families simply perform it once a year as a household tradition.

If you are combining Udak Shanti with Griha Pravesh or Vastu Shanti, tell the guruji at the start. The order of rituals and the total time change when they are performed together.

    How the ritual is performed

The exact sequence depends on the guruji's parampara and your family's custom, but most Udak Shanti rituals follow a similar flow and take around two to three hours.

    1. 1Ganesh Pujan and sankalpThe ritual begins with worship of Lord Ganesha and a sankalp taken in the name of the family, with gotra and the occasion stated.
    2. 2PunyahavachanA purification of the space and the participants, with mantras and the sprinkling of water.
    3. 3Kalash sthapanaA kalash filled with water, mango leaves and a coconut is installed on rice, and the deities are invoked into it.
    4. 4Udak Shanti recitationThe gurujis chant the shanti mantras over the kalash. This is the longest and most important part of the ritual, and the family sits quietly or follows along.
    5. 5Abhishek and sprinklingThe charged water is sprinkled on the family members, and the guruji then sprinkles it through each room of the house.
    6. 6Aarti and prasadThe ritual closes with aarti, blessings from the elders and the guruji, and prasad shared with everyone present.

    What to keep ready

Your guruji will share an exact list, but most homes keep these items ready for Udak Shanti:

    • A copper or brass kalash, mango leaves and a coconut
    • Rice, turmeric, kumkum, akshata and gulal
    • Betel leaves, supari, dry fruits and seasonal fruits
    • Flowers, garlands and durva grass
    • A small chowrang or low wooden seat with a new cloth
    • Ghee, a diya, cotton wicks, camphor and incense
    • New clothes or a blouse piece and coconut for the guruji, as per family custom
    • Clean drinking water and a few extra vessels

Many families ask the guruji to arrange the samagri. It saves a lot of running around, especially in a new flat where nothing is unpacked yet.

Udak Shanti in Pune and Mumbai today

In Pune, Udak Shanti is common across Kothrud, Baner, Aundh, Wakad, Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Hadapsar and the PCMC area, both in older bungalows and in new apartment societies. In Mumbai, families in Thane, Dombivli, Borivali, Andheri, Navi Mumbai and Dadar keep the tradition alive in flats of every size.

Space is rarely a problem, since the ritual does not need a large havan. A clean corner of the hall with room for the guruji and the family to sit is enough. If your society has rules about timings or visitors, it helps to inform the secretary in advance.

Families who are not Marathi but live in Maharashtra also often choose Udak Shanti when moving home, simply because it is the local custom and the gurujis are easy to find. A guruji can explain each step in Hindi or English if you ask.

    How much Udak Shanti costs

On PujaKarma, Udak Shanti starts at ₹5,100 as a dakshina for a guruji performing the ritual at your home. The final amount depends on a few clear factors:

    • The number of gurujis chanting (some families prefer two or more for a fuller recitation)
    • Whether samagri is arranged by the guruji or by the family
    • Whether Udak Shanti is combined with Vastu Shanti, Griha Pravesh or Satyanarayan Puja
    • Travel within the city and the time of day

Ask for the total in writing on WhatsApp before you confirm: dakshina, samagri and any travel. That way there are no surprises on the day.

Booking a guruji for Udak Shanti

Share your area, your preferred date and the occasion (Griha Pravesh, a wedding, a birthday or a fresh start) with PujaKarma on WhatsApp. We confirm a guruji who follows the Marathi vidhi, the timing, the samagri list and the dakshina before you book.

For the date itself, the guruji will check the panchang and suggest a suitable muhurat. Muhurat timings depend on the tithi, nakshatra and your family's details, so always confirm the exact time with the guruji rather than relying on a general calendar.

    Questions families ask

Is Udak Shanti the same as Vastu Shanti?

No. Udak Shanti centres on chanting shanti mantras over a kalash of water, while Vastu Shanti honours Vastu Purusha and usually includes a havan. Many families in Pune and Mumbai perform both together when entering a new home.

How long does Udak Shanti take?

Usually two to three hours. It takes longer when combined with Griha Pravesh, Vastu Shanti or Satyanarayan Puja.

Do we need a havan for Udak Shanti?

Not necessarily. The main part of the ritual is the recitation over the kalash. Some families add a small havan, which the guruji can include if you ask.

Can a non Marathi family perform Udak Shanti?

Yes. Many families living in Maharashtra choose it when moving home. The guruji can explain each step in Hindi or English.
