Overview
What is Shashtipurti?
Shashtipurti marks the completion of sixty years of life, when the sixty year cycle of the Hindu calendar comes back to the year of one’s birth. It is one of the most important family celebrations in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada homes, and increasingly in North Indian families too.
The ceremony usually includes Ganesh Puja, Kalash Puja, Navagraha prayers and a homam, followed by a renewal of the couple’s marriage, in which the husband ties the mangalsutra again before their children and grandchildren. The children often perform the rituals in honour of their parents.
