What is Ganga Puja?
Worship of Maa Ganga on the ghats of Varanasi, with sankalp, offerings, deep daan and aarti, traditionally performed on Ganga Dussehra and family occasions.
A home puja follows the same steps as on the ghat, adapted to the puja room: sankalp in the family's name and gotra, worship of Ganga in the kalash with flowers, kumkum, milk and a chunri, recitation of the Ganga Ashtakam or Ganga stotras, and a small deep daan and aarti. A Pandit in Hyderabad can guide the whole family through it.

Why Families Choose Hyderabad for Ganga Puja
Many North Indian families in Hyderabad, especially those with roots in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, observe Ganga Dussehra on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami and like to mark it at home when they cannot travel. Telugu and other South Indian households also keep Gangajal from a Kashi yatra in the puja room and use it in every ritual, from Gruhapravesam to the last rites.
Telugu tradition honours the Godavari as Dakshina Ganga, and families from the city travel to its banks at Basara, home of the Gnana Saraswati temple, or Bhadrachalam, home of the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple, for a river snan and worship. Local Traditions & Timing
- Ganga Dussehra falls in May or June, among the hottest weeks of the Hyderabad year; an early morning muhurtham is more comfortable for elders.
- Keep sealed Gangajal ready before the day. Families often use water brought back from Kashi or Haridwar; bottled Gangajal is also sold in puja stores in the city.
- City lakes such as Hussain Sagar are not suitable for floating lamps. Many families do the deep daan at home instead, floating a diya in a brass urli or basin of water mixed with a little Gangajal.
- Basara and Bhadrachalam are several hours' drive from Hyderabad and have their own priests; PujaKarma does not arrange Pandits there. During Godavari Pushkaralu, held once in twelve years, both places see very large crowds.
- If you want the puja on the Ganga, PujaKarma arranges Pandits in Varanasi, so the ghat puja can be booked from Hyderabad.

- For a Varanasi puja joined online, agree the sunrise or evening slot on the ghat in advance, and keep a diya lit at home as you watch.
- If you are combining the puja with rites for ancestors, mention it, as tarpan or Shraddham are booked separately.
