- 1Setting up the chowki. A decorated chowki is prepared with a red cloth, the image or pindi form of the Goddess, flowers, chunari and the place for the jyot.
- 2Ganesh Pujan and kalash sthapana. The Pandit begins with Ganesh Pujan, installs the kalash and takes the sankalp with the family's names and gotra.
- 3Jyot prajwalan. The akhand jyot is lit with ghee and worshipped as the presence of the Goddess, to burn through the evening.
