Overview
Durga Puja honours Goddess Durga, the fierce yet compassionate form of Shakti who, in the Devi Mahatmya, defeats the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She is worshipped as a mother who protects her devotees and restores balance when adharma rises.
At home, a Durga Puja usually includes kalash sthapana, invocation of the Goddess, offerings of red chunri, sindoor, hibiscus and other red flowers, recitation from the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa, and aarti. It may be performed on a single day or across the festival period, depending on the family's wishes.
The best-known celebration is during Sharad Navratri, and in Bengali tradition the grand Durga Puja from Shashthi to Vijaya Dashami. Varanasi, with its large Bengali community, has a long history of both home and community pujas. Customs vary widely, and the Pandit will follow your family's tradition.

Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṁsthitā, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.
The Devi Mahatmya, part of the Markandeya Purana, tells how the gods combined their powers to manifest Durga. Her many arms carry weapons given by different deities, a symbol that she holds the strength of all divine forces together.
Devotees associate Durga worship with courage, protection and inner strength, and with the victory of good over negativity. Ashtami and Navami are traditionally considered especially powerful days for her worship.

A red cloth is spread on the chowki with an idol or picture of Maa Durga, a kalash, a ghee lamp and red flowers.
Ganesha is worshipped first, then the Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names, gotra and intention.
The kalash is established and the Goddess is invoked into the idol or image with Vedic and Tantric mantras as per tradition.
Maa Durga is offered snan, red chunri, sindoor, bangles and shringar items, hibiscus flowers, incense and lamp.
Selected chapters of the Durga Saptashati, the Devi Kavach or Durga Chalisa are recited, depending on the chosen vidhi.
Bhog such as halwa, puri, chana and fruits is offered, followed by aarti and pushpanjali.
The puja closes with a prayer asking forgiveness for any shortcomings and distribution of prasad.
