Navagraha Homam in Guwahati: Local Traditions
Guwahati sits beside the Brahmaputra below Nilachal hill, home to Kamakhya, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas. Ambubachi Mela draws huge crowds of pilgrims and sadhus, and Durga Puja is celebrated across the city.
Assamese households blend Vedic ritual with the Vaishnava tradition of Srimanta Sankaradeva, so Naam Kirtan and Satyanarayan Puja are both common. As the gateway to the Northeast, the city also has large Bengali, Marwari and Hindi speaking populations.
