Overview
Navagraha Homam is a Vedic fire ritual in which offerings are made to the nine grahas, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu. Each graha is invoked with its own mantra and, in many traditions, with its specific samidha (holy wood) and grains.
Families often choose it when an astrologer suggests graha shanti, at the start of a new phase of life, or as a general ritual for balance and harmony. It is also commonly performed as part of larger ceremonies such as griha pravesh or weddings.
It can be performed at home, at a venue or through an online sankalp with the family joining by video.
ब्रह्मा मुरारिस्त्रिपुरान्तकारी भानुः शशी भूमिसुतो बुधश्च।
गुरुश्च शुक्रः शनिराहुकेतवः सर्वे ग्रहाः शान्तिकरा भवन्तु॥
Brahmā murāris tripurāntakārī bhānuḥ śaśī bhūmisuto budhaś ca, guruś ca śukraḥ śani rāhu ketavaḥ sarve grahāḥ śāntikarā bhavantu.
In Vedic astrology, the nine grahas are believed to influence different areas of life. Worshipping them together is traditionally seen as a way of seeking harmony with these influences.
The homam form adds offerings through Agni, and many families regard it as a comprehensive graha shanti ritual rather than addressing a single planet.

The sankalp is taken with names, gotra and, where relevant, the horoscope details.
Lord Ganesha is worshipped and the kalash established.
The nine grahas are invoked on a mandala or with their representative grains and colours.
The holy fire is kindled in the havan kund.
Offerings are made to each graha with its mantra and associated samidha.
The final offering completes the homam.
Aarti is performed and the Pandit may suggest traditional daan associated with specific grahas.
