Dharamshala
What is Navagraha Puja?
A traditional worship of all nine grahas together, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu, performed to seek balance, peace and blessings in the household.
Navagraha Puja is among the rituals families in Dharamshala book most often, alongside Havan, Satyanarayan Katha and Vivah Sanskar.

Navagraha Puja in Dharamshala: Local Traditions
Dharamshala sits below the Dhauladhar in Kangra, the land of the Devi shaktipeeths. Chamunda Devi, Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra and Jwalamukhi are within easy reach, and the Bhagsunag Mandir of Shiva above McLeod Ganj draws visitors through the year.
Families across Kangra keep Devi worship at the centre of every occasion: havan, Mata ki Chowki and Navratri puja are booked often, alongside weddings, Mundan and Shraddha. Hill homes and village roads mean Pandits plan travel and samagri ahead.

Navagraha Puja vidhi, step by step
- 1Preparation and purification. The space is cleaned and the altar set up. The Pandit performs achaman and pavitrikaran to purify the participants and samagri.
- 2Ganesh puja and sankalp. Lord Ganesha is worshipped first. The Pandit then takes the sankalp with the names, gotra and, where relevant, birth details of the family members.
- 3Kalash sthapana. A kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut is established and Varuna and other devatas are invoked.
- 4Navagraha mandala sthapana. The nine grahas are installed on a mandala, each in its traditional position and colour, often using their associated grains.
- 5Individual graha puja and mantras. Each graha is offered flowers, akshat, its traditional grain and naivedya while its Vedic or beej mantra is recited.
- 6Navagraha homam (optional). If the family chooses, a homam is performed with samidha traditionally associated with each graha.
- 7Aarti and prarthana. Aarti is performed and the family offers a prayer for peace and well-being.

What is the cost of Navagraha Puja in Dharamshala?
Navagraha Puja in Dharamshala starts from about ₹6,100 for one Pandit and around 2 to 3 hours for the puja; 3 to 5 hours with navagraha homam; multi-day options with individual graha jaap.
