Sri Chakra (Navavarana) Puja in Meerut: Local Traditions
Meerut is one of western UP's oldest cities, with a large Cantonment and the Augharnath Mandir, also called the Kali Paltan Mandir, linked with the uprising of 1857. The Nauchandi Mela held after Holi is a city tradition, and in Sawan the Kanwar Yatra fills the roads as kanwariyas carry Ganga jal from Haridwar towards Shiv temples such as Pura Mahadev.
Pandits here serve a mix of old city trading families, Punjabi families who settled after Partition and the surrounding Jat, Gujjar and Tyagi villages. The wedding season is heavy, and Rudrabhishek, havan and Satyanarayan Katha run through the year. Families also travel to Garhmukteshwar on the Ganga for Kartik Purnima snan, Mundan and Asthi Visarjan.
