Durga Puja in Indore: Local Traditions

Indore is Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital, and its trading families keep a busy puja calendar. Khajrana Ganesh is where many households start any new venture, and Rangpanchami and Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated on a scale few cities match.

Indore follows the Malwa vidhi, with Hindi and Malvi in the home and Maharashtrian influence dating to the Holkar rulers. Marwari, Maheshwari, Jain and Gujarati trading families, together with Kanyakubja, Gaur and Nagar Brahmin priests, give the city a wide variety of North Indian ritual practice.
