Overview

Jitiya Vrat Puja (Jivitputrika) for families in Panchganga Ghat

Jitiya, or Jivitputrika Vrat, is one of the most important vrats for mothers in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and among Bhojpuri and Maithil families living in Delhi NCR, Pune, Hyderabad and beyond. It is kept over three days in the dark fortnight of Ashwin, around Pitru Paksha.

Panchganga Ghat lies on the northern part of Varanasi's riverfront. Its name is traditionally explained as the meeting place of five rivers, and it is one of the ghats pilgrims have long visited for a holy dip in Kashi.

Planning Your Puja in Panchganga Ghat

The ghat is reached on foot through old city lanes; vehicles stop well short of it.
Steps are steep and can be slippery, so plan carefully for elderly relatives.
Kartik mornings are busy with devotees taking snan.
Boats from the central ghats are another way to reach this stretch of the river.
Water levels rise in the monsoon and the lower steps may be under water.
