Overview
What is Jitiya Vrat Puja (Jivitputrika)?
Jitiya, or Jivitputrika Vrat, is one of the most important vrats for mothers in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and among Bhojpuri and Maithil families living in Delhi NCR, Pune, Hyderabad and beyond. It is kept over three days in the dark fortnight of Ashwin, around Pitru Paksha.
On the first day, Nahay Khay, the mother bathes and eats a single pure meal. The second day, Ashtami, is a strict nirjala fast without food or water, with worship of Jimutavahana, the noble king remembered for giving his life to save others. On the third day the fast is broken with parana.
A Pandit guides the sankalp, the puja of Jimutavahana and the reading of the Jitiya katha, which tells the stories of Jimutavahana and of the kite and the jackal. This guidance is especially valued by mothers keeping the vrat for the first time away from their home town.
Significance of Jitiya Vrat Puja (Jivitputrika)
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
Jimutavahana is remembered for his selfless sacrifice to protect others. Mothers worship him praying that their children are protected in the same way.
The vrat is a strong expression of a mother's devotion. Many women keep it every year once they begin, and the traditions pass from one generation to the next.
