What is Namkaran Sanskar?
The traditional Hindu naming ceremony for a newborn, welcoming the child into the family with Vedic prayers and blessings from elders.
Many families choose a name based on the nakshatra syllable from the birth chart, and the Pandit can help with this before the ceremony.
माङ्गल्यं तन्तुनानेन मम जीवनहेतुना।
कण्ठे बध्नामि सुभगे त्वं जीव शरदां शतम्॥
Why Families Choose Pune for Namkaran Sanskar
In Marathi homes the naming is called Barsa, traditionally held on the twelfth day, with the baby placed in a decorated cradle and the women of the family singing palna songs. Some families keep the twelfth day strictly, while others choose a later date that suits relatives.
Families from other states living in Pune follow their own timing, often the eleventh day or later, and some combine Namkaran with Annaprashan or a small havan. The Pandit will follow whichever custom your family keeps.

Local Traditions & Timing
- The baby's comfort comes first, so keep the vidhi short and the room calm.
- Avoid heavy havan smoke near the newborn; the Pandit can keep it minimal.
- Relatives travelling from other cities may need a weekend date.
- Keep the birth time and place ready for the nakshatra name.

Planning tips
- Share the birth details so the Pandit can suggest the starting syllable.
- Decide whether you want a cradle ceremony with palna songs.
- Keep a plate of rice or a slate ready if your custom writes the name.
