What is Namkaran Sanskar?
Namkaran Sanskar is the ceremony in which a newborn is formally given their name. One of the sixteen Hindu sanskars, it is a joyful family occasion, bringing together parents, grandparents and relatives to bless the child at the start of life.
Traditionally, the Pandit may consider the child’s birth nakshatra to suggest auspicious starting syllables for the name, though many families today choose a name they love and simply ask for it to be blessed. The ceremony includes Ganesh Puja, prayers to the Navagrahas and family deity, and the moment when the name is whispered into the child’s ear and announced to the family.
