Upanayana (Janeu) Sanskar vidhi, step by step

1. 1Ganesh Puja and Sankalp. The ceremony begins with Lord Ganesha’s worship and a sankalp with the child’s name and gotra.
2. 2Mundan or Keshanta (as per custom). In some traditions, the child’s head is shaved or hair trimmed, followed by a ritual bath.
3. 3Havan. The holy fire is established and offerings are made with Vedic mantras.
4. 4Yagnopavit Dharan. The child is invested with the holy thread while the acharya recites the associated mantras.
5. 5Gayatri Mantra Upadesh. The acharya, or the father as per custom, initiates the child into the Gayatri Mantra, often under a cloth canopy.
6. 6Danda and Bhiksha. The child holds a staff as a symbolic student and receives alms, first from the mother and then from elders.
7. 7Blessings and Aarti. The family blesses the child, and the Pandit explains the daily practices associated with the janeu.
