Ayyappa Puja in Ayodhya: Local Traditions

Ayodhya, the birthplace of Shri Ram on the banks of the Saryu, has seen a surge of pilgrims since the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir opened in 2024. Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the Nageshwarnath Mandir are part of every pilgrim's round, and the city's ghats host Mundan, Saryu Pujan and ancestral rites every day.

For Pandits the calendar is set by the Ramanandi festivals: Ram Navami, the Sawan Jhula Mela, the Kartik Parikrama and Snan, Vivah Panchami and the Deepotsav at Diwali. Families in Faizabad and the new colonies also book the household cycle of Satyanarayan Katha, Griha Pravesh and Vivah.
