Overview
What is Vishnu Puja?
Vishnu Puja is the worship of Lord Vishnu, who in Hindu tradition preserves and sustains the universe and descends as avatars such as Rama and Krishna. He is worshipped as Narayana, often together with Goddess Lakshmi, and is the focus of Vaishnava devotion across India.
The puja usually includes invocation of Vishnu with the Purusha Suktam, shodashopachara offerings with tulsi leaves and yellow flowers, and recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Vishnu found in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. Many families also include the Om Namo Narayanaya mantra and a Vishnu aarti.
It is especially observed on Ekadashi, on Thursdays, during the holy month of Kartik and on days such as Devuthani Ekadashi. Practices vary by sampradaya and region, and the Pandit will follow your family's tradition.

Significance
Vishnu is described in the Puranas as resting on Shesha in the cosmic ocean, holding the conch, discus, mace and lotus. Each symbol is traditionally interpreted: the conch for the primordial sound, the chakra for the mind, the mace for strength and the lotus for purity.
Tulsi holds a special place in his worship, and no offering to Vishnu is considered complete without a tulsi leaf. Devotees associate Vishnu Puja with steadiness, dharma in daily life and a sense of being protected and cared for.

How the puja is performed

Preparation of the altar
A chowki with yellow cloth is set with an image or idol of Vishnu or Lakshmi-Narayan, a kalash, diya and tulsi leaves.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
After a brief Ganesh Pujan, the Pandit takes a sankalp with the family's names, gotra and intention.

Avahan with Purusha Suktam
Lord Vishnu is invoked with the sixteen verses of the Purusha Suktam, each accompanying an upachara.

Shodashopachara offerings
Vishnu is offered panchamrit snan, yellow vastra, chandan, tulsi, yellow flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.

Vishnu Sahasranama path
The thousand names of Vishnu are recited, sometimes followed by japa of Om Namo Narayanaya or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

Aarti and pushpanjali
The family performs Om Jai Jagdish Hare or a traditional Vishnu aarti and offers flowers with prayers.
