Hartalika Teej Puja in Dehradun: Local Traditions
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand, set in the Doon valley between the Shivaliks and the Mussoorie hills. Its most loved temple is Tapkeshwar Mahadev, a cave shrine where water drips on the Shivling, which draws big crowds on Maha Shivratri, and the Daat Kali Mandir on the Saharanpur road is where many families stop before a new vehicle or a journey.
Garhwali and Kumaoni Brahmin purohits serve Pahadi families in Dehradun, following hill customs for Mundan, Janeu, Vivah and kul devta pujan, with explanation in Garhwali, Kumaoni or Hindi. Punjabi Hindu families keep Punjabi traditions such as Mata ki Chowki and Karva Chauth, and families from the plains book standard North Indian vidhi.
