Overview
What is Katyayani Puja?
Goddess Katyayani is the sixth of the Navadurga, the nine forms of Durga worshipped during Navratri. She is described as a fierce yet compassionate form of the Goddess, and her worship has long been associated with prayers for a good life partner and a happy marriage.
The best-known reference comes from the Bhagavata Purana, where the gopis of Vraja observed a month-long vrat to Katyayani, praying for Lord Krishna as their husband. Inspired by this, many families perform Katyayani Puja for their daughters, and increasingly for sons as well, as a prayer for a suitable match.

Significance
Katyayani is traditionally believed to be the form of the Goddess born in the ashram of Sage Katyayana to vanquish the demon Mahishasura. As a symbol of courage and divine protection, she is revered for giving strength and clarity to her devotees.
The Katyayani mantra recited by the gopis, praying to the Goddess for Nandagopa’s son as husband, remains one of the most widely chanted prayers for marriage. Families traditionally regard the puja as a devotional offering that brings faith and calm to the question of marriage.

The puja begins with Lord Ganesha’s worship and a sankalp in the name and gotra of the devotee.

A kalash is established and the Goddess is invoked into the idol or picture.

Shodashopachara Puja
Goddess Katyayani is worshipped with the traditional offerings, water, flowers, chunri, sindoor, incense, lamp and naivedya.

The Katyayani mantra is recited a set number of times, as advised by the Pandit.

Durga Stuti or Path
Selected stotras or passages in praise of the Goddess are recited, depending on the vidhi chosen.
