Hartalika Teej Puja in Haridwar: Local Traditions
Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the hills, and it is one of the most important places in North India for rites for the departed. Families bring ashes for Asthi Visarjan at Har Ki Pauri, perform Shraddha and Pind Daan at Kushavart Ghat and Narayani Shila, and bring children for Mundan on the ghats. The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri draws crowds every day.
Haridwar's tirth rites are led by hereditary Panda families, many living in Kankhal and Jwalapur, who serve the same jajman families from particular districts across North India. Garhwali Pahadi purohits serve families from the hills, and household rites in the city follow North Indian vidhi with Sanskrit mantras and Hindi explanation.
