What is Hartalika Teej Puja?

Hartalika Teej falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya and is observed widely in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. It remembers Goddess Parvati's tapasya to win Lord Shiva as her husband, and the story of her companions who took her to the forest, which gives the vrat its name.

Women keep a nirjala fast and worship clay idols of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha made or bought for the day. The puja is often performed in the evening, with the Hartalika katha, and many families keep a jagran through the night before the idols are immersed the next morning.

A Pandit can lead the puja and katha, guide the sankalp, and help families with the order of worship across the evening and the following morning.

Significance

Parvati's devotion and steadfastness are held up as an ideal, and the vrat is associated with harmony in marriage and the blessings of Shiva and Parvati together.

Unmarried girls traditionally keep the vrat with the prayer for a good life partner, in the spirit of Parvati's tapasya.

How the puja is performed

Sankalp and preparation
The vrati takes the sankalp for the nirjala fast. A mandap of banana leaves or flowers is prepared, with clay idols of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha.

Shodashopachara puja
The Pandit leads the worship with sixteen offerings, including bel patra, flowers, shringar items for Parvati and naivedya.

Hartalika katha
The story of Parvati's tapasya is recited, followed by aarti.

Jagran and visarjan
Many families keep a night jagran with bhajans. The next morning a short puja is done, the fast is broken and the idols are immersed.
