Overview
What is Upanayana (Janeu) Sanskar?
Upanayana, widely known as Janeu Sanskar, is the ceremony in which a child receives the holy thread (yagnopavit) and is initiated into the Gayatri Mantra. Traditionally it marked the beginning of formal Vedic study under a guru, and it remains an important sanskar in many Hindu families.
Varanasi, one of the oldest centres of Vedic learning, is a meaningful place for Upanayana. The ceremony typically includes Ganesh Puja, a havan, the wearing of the janeu, Gayatri upadesh from the acharya and the symbolic Bhiksha, where the child receives alms from the mother and elders.

Significance
The word Upanayana means ‘leading near’, traditionally, bringing the student close to the teacher and to holy knowledge. The three strands of the janeu are commonly associated with duties towards the gods, the sages and the ancestors, and with a commitment to purity of thought, word and action.
Receiving the Gayatri Mantra is regarded as the heart of the ceremony. In many traditions, it is considered a spiritual second birth, and the child is encouraged to maintain daily prayer and respect for learning.
