Overview
What is Saraswati Puja?
Saraswati Puja honours Goddess Saraswati, who is associated with vidya (knowledge), vani (speech), music, arts and wisdom. She is depicted in white, seated on a lotus or with a swan, holding the veena, a book and a mala.
The puja is most widely observed on Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha, which marks the arrival of spring. Students place their books, pens and instruments before the Goddess, and in many homes young children begin writing their first letters (vidyarambh or akshar abhyas) on this day.
The vidhi typically includes kalash sthapana, Ganesh Pujan, invocation of the Goddess, offerings of white and yellow flowers, recitation of the Saraswati Vandana (Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala) and Saraswati Stotram, and aarti. In Bengal, Odisha and eastern India, Saraswati Puja is a major community festival. Customs vary, and the Pandit will follow your family's tradition.

Significance
In the Rigveda, Saraswati is praised as a holy river and later as the goddess of speech. Over time she came to be revered as the source of learning, eloquence and creative inspiration, and as the consort of Brahma.
Devotees associate her worship with clarity of thought, discipline in study and refinement in the arts. The custom of placing books and instruments before her expresses respect for knowledge itself.

An idol or picture of Saraswati is placed on a white or yellow cloth, with books, pens and instruments arranged nearby.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
Ganesha is worshipped first, then the sankalp is taken with names, gotra and intention, often including students' names.

The kalash is established and Goddess Saraswati is invoked with Vedic mantras.

The Goddess is offered white and yellow flowers, chandan, akshat, yellow vastra, incense, lamp and naivedya such as kesar kheer, boondi or seasonal ber fruit.

The Saraswati Vandana, Saraswati Stotram and mantra japa are recited by the Pandit and family.
