Govardhan Puja in Ayodhya: Local Traditions
Ayodhya, the birthplace of Shri Ram on the banks of the Saryu, has seen a surge of pilgrims since the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir opened in 2024. Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the Nageshwarnath Mandir are part of every pilgrim's round, and the city's ghats host Mundan, Saryu Pujan and ancestral rites every day.
Ayodhya is the home ground of the Saryupareen Brahmins, named after the land beyond the Saryu, and many purohit families here are Saryupareen. Worship is shaped by the Ramanandi Vaishnav tradition, with Ramcharitmanas recitation, Sundarkand and Akhand Ramayan Path central to both temple and household rites.
