Overview
What is Krishna Puja?
Krishna Puja is the worship of Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, loved as the playful child of Gokul, the companion of Radha and the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita. His worship is rich in bhakti, and many families care for him at home as Laddu Gopal, the infant Krishna.
The puja usually includes abhishek with panchamrit, dressing and adorning the deity, offerings of makhan-mishri, tulsi and peacock feathers, recitation of mantras such as Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, bhajans and aarti. On Janmashtami, the main worship takes place at midnight, the time of Krishna's birth, followed by the swinging of the cradle (jhoola).
Practices differ considerably between Vaishnava sampradayas and regions, from the Pushtimarg seva of Braj and Nathdwara to Gaudiya traditions. The Pandit will follow the style your family is comfortable with.

Significance
The Bhagavata Purana describes Krishna's birth in Mathura's prison on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami under Rohini nakshatra, and his childhood in Gokul and Vrindavan. His leelas are remembered as expressions of divine love that draw devotees close through affection rather than fear.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches Arjuna about duty, detachment and devotion. Devotees associate his worship with joy, loving devotion (prema bhakti) and guidance in facing life's dilemmas with equanimity.

Decorating the altar
The altar is decorated with flowers, and for Janmashtami a small cradle (jhoola) is prepared for Bal Krishna.

Ganesh Pujan and sankalp
Ganesha is worshipped first, then the Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names, gotra and intention.

Avahan
Shri Krishna is invoked into the idol or Laddu Gopal with Vedic and Puranic mantras.

Panchamrit abhishek
The deity is bathed with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, then with Ganga jal, often at midnight on Janmashtami.

Shringar and offerings
Krishna is dressed in new clothes, adorned with a peacock feather and flute, and offered tulsi, flowers, chandan, makhan-mishri and other bhog.

Mantras, the Gopal Sahasranama or selected Bhagavad Gita verses are recited, along with bhajans and kirtan.
