Krishna Puja vidhi, step by step
- 1Decorating the altar. The altar is decorated with flowers, and for Janmashtami a small cradle (jhoola) is prepared for Bal Krishna.
- 2Ganesh Pujan and sankalp. Ganesha is worshipped first, then the Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names, gotra and intention.
- 3Avahan. Shri Krishna is invoked into the idol or Laddu Gopal with Vedic and Puranic mantras.
- 4Panchamrit abhishek. The deity is bathed with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, then with Ganga jal, often at midnight on Janmashtami.
- 5Shringar and offerings. Krishna is dressed in new clothes, adorned with a peacock feather and flute, and offered tulsi, flowers, chandan, makhan-mishri and other bhog.
- 6Mantra, path and bhajan. Mantras, the Gopal Sahasranama or selected Bhagavad Gita verses are recited, along with bhajans and kirtan.
- 7Aarti and jhoola. The family sings the Krishna aarti, gently swings the cradle and shares prasad such as panjiri and panchamrit.
