For Bengali families, the ritual year is shaped by the Goddess, from Durga Puja in autumn to Lokkhi Puja soon after and Saraswati Puja in spring. Mantras are recited in Sanskrit, often with a distinctly Bengali pronunciation, and families expect the Purohit Moshai to guide them in Bengali.

Bengali puja practice follows its own ritual manuals and order of worship. Lokkhi Puja is commonly performed at home on Kojagari Purnima, the full moon after Durga Puja, with alpona drawn on the floor, a lokkhi jhapi or ghat, and bhog such as khichuri, labra and naru. Many families also worship Lokkhi on Thursdays.

Satyanarayan Puja is often called Sinni in Bengali homes, after the prasad of flour, milk, banana and sugar mixed together. It is commonly held on Purnima or after a family event, with the Panchali read aloud in Bengali.

Durga Puja is usually celebrated in community pandals, but some families hold it at home or perform Durga worship on specific days. Shraddho, Upanayan (Poita) and Biye each follow Bengali customs that vary between families, so share your practices with the Pandit in advance.
