    Kannada ritual traditions

Kannada families from across Karnataka follow Vedic rituals shaped by their community and sampradaya. Mantras are in Sanskrit, while the explanation and the names families use for each ritual are usually in Kannada.

Whether you are planning a Gruhapravesha, a Satyanarayana Pooja or a Ganapathi Homa, we connect you with a purohit familiar with the Kannada vidhi who can follow the customs your family is used to.

    How the vidhi commonly differs

Gruhapravesha in many Kannada homes begins early in the morning with Ganapathi Pooje, Punyahavachana and a Vastu Homa, followed by boiling milk in the new kitchen. Some families also perform a Navagraha Homa or Satyanarayana Pooja on the same day.

Sampradaya matters a great deal. Madhwa families follow the tradition of Sri Madhvacharya, with emphasis on the worship of Vishnu, while Smarta families follow the Advaita tradition associated with Adi Shankaracharya, and Sri Vaishnava families have their own practices. Mantras, tilak and some rituals can differ accordingly.

Festivals shape the ritual year too. Gowri Ganesha habba, where Goddess Gowri is worshipped the day before Ganesha, and Varamahalakshmi Vrata are observed in many homes. Because practices vary, sharing your family's customs with the purohit helps.

    Customs families often follow

    • Gowri Ganesha habba

Many families worship Goddess Gowri on the day before Ganesha Chaturthi, followed by Ganesha pooja the next day.

    • Varamahalakshmi Vrata

Married women in many families worship Goddess Lakshmi on the Friday before Shravana Purnima.

    • Rangoli at the entrance

Patterns drawn at the doorstep on festival and pooja days to welcome the divine and guests.

    • Boiling milk in the new home

Letting milk boil over in the new kitchen during Gruhapravesha, commonly seen as a sign of abundance.
