How the Vidhi Commonly Differs
The Satyanarayana Vratham is one of the most loved observances in Telugu homes. Many families follow the style associated with the Annavaram tradition, with the vratha katha told in five chapters in Telugu, and prasadam of wheat rava, ghee, sugar and banana. It is commonly performed on Purnima, Ekadashi or after a family milestone.
Gruhapravesam usually begins very early, often before sunrise. The family enters with a kalasham, and pala pongali, boiling milk until it overflows in the new kitchen, is a cherished custom. Ganapathi Puja, Punyahavachanam, Vastu Puja and sometimes a Ganapathi or Navagraha Homam follow, according to the family's wishes.
Telugu families belong to many communities and sampradayas, including Smarta and Sri Vaishnava traditions, and the details of kalasha decoration, mantras and prasadam can differ. Sharing your family's practices with the purohit beforehand helps the puja feel familiar.
