Overview
What is Ganapati Homam?
Ganapati Homam is a Vedic fire offering dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the deity invoked first in almost every Hindu ceremony. Offerings of ghee, modak, durva grass, coconut and other samagri are made into the holy fire while the Pandit chants Ganapati mantras, often including verses from the Ganapati Atharvashirsha.
Many families perform it at the start of something important, moving into a new home, opening a business, beginning a major project or before a wedding. It is also commonly done on Sankashti Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chaturthi or at the start of the financial year.
The homam can be performed at home, at a venue of your choice or with an online sankalp, where a Pandit performs the ritual while the family joins by video.

Significance
Lord Ganesha is revered as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and as the lord of wisdom and auspicious beginnings. Invoking him through fire is traditionally regarded as a way of preparing the ground for whatever follows.
In Vedic practice, Agni carries offerings to the deities. A Ganapati Homam combines this fire worship with Ganesha's role as the first-worshipped deity, which is why it is often chosen as the opening rite before larger ceremonies.

How the puja is performed

Preparation and purification
The space is cleaned, the havan kund set up and the family seated facing the fire with the samagri arranged.

Sankalp
The Pandit takes the sankalp with the family's names, gotra and the purpose of the homam.

Kalash and Ganesh sthapana
A kalash is established and Lord Ganesha is invoked with mantras, flowers and offerings.

Agni sthapana
The holy fire is kindled in the havan kund with Vedic mantras.

Ganapati mantra ahutis
Offerings of ghee, modak, durva, sesame and other samagri are made while Ganapati mantras are chanted.

Purnahuti
The final offering is made, usually with a coconut and ghee, completing the homam.

Aarti and prasad
Aarti is performed, blessings are sought and prasad is shared with the family.
